Connecticut’s State Insect – European
Praying Mantis
This insect was originally from Europe.
In the 1600’s, they were imported to
Connecticut to help farmers combat pests that would eat their crops.
The European praying mantis is light
green in color.
They can grow to be 7-8cm in length.
The European praying mantis has wings,
which allows them to fly.
They get their name from the stance that
they take while waiting to capture prey. It looks as if they are praying.
