I was born in Iowa and went to college at Stanford University.  

I can speak Chinese and became a millionaire long before I was a president.  

When I was a president, I donated all of my salary to charity.  

I was a Quaker and I was the one who approved the Star Spangled Banner.  

I became unpopular during my presidency because of the Great Depression.   

I was the first president to have a phone on my desk and my sons had pet alligators that would wander around the White House.  

I was one of only four presidents to live past 90.

Do you know who the CT State Hero is?

Connecticut’s State Heroine – Prudence Crandall

She was born on September 3, 1803 in Hopkinton, Rhode Island.

Prudence Crandall’s family was part of the Quaker community, and unlike other communities at this time, they believed that education was important for men and women. 

Prudence Crandall opened a private girl’s academy in 1831 in Canterbury, Connecticut.

She taught the girls a rigorous curriculum, which made her one of the best schools in the state.

In 1833, Prudence Crandall admitted an African American student named Sarah Harris, who was studying to become a teacher for African American children.

Later, she even created a school specifically for African American girls.

Due to attitudes at that time, Prudence Crandall faced many struggles trying to run her schools, but she remained brave.

Silent Cal ~ Our 30th President

I was born on a farm in Vermont and studied at Amherst College.  

When I was elected president, my dad carried out the inauguration ceremony.  

During my presidency, I make pro-business policies, the Kellogg-Briand Pact was agreed upon, and my picture was printed on the half dollar.  

I was known to be a man of few words.  

I had two pet raccoons that would run around the White House.

To add even more excitement to your summer reading adventure, sign up for the Avon Free Public Library’s summer reading program and get awesome prizes for all of your hard work! 

Our program starts with choosing either a 6, 12, or 24 book goal to complete by the end of summer. As you read, you can log the titles online, and during your next visit to the library, you can claim sweet treats like a cupcake from Taste by Spellbound, a cookie from The Bee’s Knees Café, a J. Foster ice cream cone, and a Ben and Jerry’s ice cream cone. 

Once you’re full on sweets, it’s time to enjoy the other cool prizes, like a Bertucci’s kids’ meal, Yard Goats baseball tickets, and a pass to Quassy amusement park. 

Every visit to the library gives you another chance to win our summer prize packages. Just grab a yellow ticket from the bin on our desk, write your name and phone number, and place it inside one of our 14 prize jars. 

Prizes include a ukulele, Pokémon cards, a tea set, a LEGO Minecraft kit, a butterfly home, and more! 

At the end of the summer, one lucky winner will win each prize. If you can’t wait for all the excitement, enter your ticket into the Weekly Prize jar for a chance to win tickets to Old Sturbridge Village, the KidsPlay museum, and more. Weekly Prize winners are selected every Monday throughout the summer.

4. Fill out the form with the information you are asked and hit save

5. Start logging your books!

6. When you log into your account and it tells you that you are eligible to claim your rewards, come to the library to pick them up!

Do you know our State Insect?

 Connecticut’s State Insect – European Praying Mantis

This insect was originally from Europe.

In the 1600’s, they were imported to Connecticut to help farmers combat pests that would eat their crops.

The European praying mantis is light green in color.

They can grow to be 7-8cm in length.

The European praying mantis has wings, which allows them to fly.

They get their name from the stance that they take while waiting to capture prey. It looks as if they are praying.

Wobbly Warren ~ Our 29th President

I was born in Ohio as the eldest of 8 children and loved public speaking growing up.  

I have been known for being unprofessional, dishonest, and for being a part of the “Teapot Dome Bribery Scandal.”  

I ended World War 1 in 1921.  

I loved to golf, gamble, and play poker.  

I had a dog named “Laddie Boy” who got to sit in on my cabinet meetings.  

I died only 2 years into my presidency.

The Yo-Yo Guy is coming on 

Wednesday

July 20th at 3 pm 

to put on a show like never before.

See some of his cool tricks like Walk the Dog, Rock the Baby, Boingy-Boingy, and Iron Whip.  

Yo-Yos will whiz through the air, fly across the stage, and do things you never knew a Yo-Yo could do.  

The Yo-Yo Guy holds 4 Guinness World Records and has been on Discovery Channel and PBS kids.

Who is Connecticut's State Hero?

Connecticut’s State Hero – Nathan Hale

Nathan Hale was born on June 6, 1755.

In 1773, Nathan Hale graduated from Yale University.

He worked as a schoolteacher until the year 1775, when the American Revolutionary War began.

Nathan Hale joined the Connecticut militia. He volunteered to spy on the British troops, but he had never trained to be a spy.

It is not clear how the British found out he was a spy, but when they discovered his secret, they arrested him.

It is said that Nathan Hale’s last words were, “I only regret that I have but one life to give for my country”.

Professor ~ Our 28th President........

I was born in Virginia and my father was a founder of the Southern Presbyterian Church.  

I was the first president to earn a Ph.D., and was a professor and eventual president at Princeton.  

I led the United States into World War I after a German submarine sunk the Lusitania, a cruise ship with American passengers on board.  

I was the first president to cross the Atlantic Ocean, and I helped to negotiate the peace treaty with the League of Nations.  

I suffered a stroke during my presidency and became paralyzed and almost blind.  

My most famous quote is, “life does not consist in thinking, it consists in acting.”

Do you know our State Bird?

Connecticut’s State Bird - The America Robin

The American robin can be heard singing all across North America.

They are large songbirds with a round body, an orange chest, and long legs.

You can spot these birds all year round, but during the winter, they spend the majority of their time in the trees.

They are easy to spot in the mornings during the spring, when they land on yards in search of earthworms.

During the afternoon, they can be found eating fruits like hawthorn, dogwood, and juniper berries.

The oldest American robin on record was 13 years and 11 months old!

Big Bill ~ Our 27th President

I was born in Ohio and studied at Yale College.  

I then continued my studies at Cincinnati Law School and worked as a Lawyer, Politician, and statesman before I was elected president.  

I helped New Mexico and Arizona to join the United States, becoming the 47^th and 48^th states.  

I had the nickname “Big Bill” because I weighed 332 pounds.   

I died of a heart attack when I was 72 and my funeral was the first to be broadcasted on the radio.
