Explore the J600s.

(The J stands for Juvenile ~ which means it’s a book for kids)

If you’re looking to find out more about technology, the J600s are the place to look.  

This section of the nonfiction covers the way things work, inventions, the human body, firefighters, airplanes, cars and trucks, space ships, gardening, pets, farm animals, cookbooks and how things are made. 

You can find books ranging on topics from how to take care of your dog, to how to bake a cake, to what it is like to go to space. 

Some of the books you can find at the Avon Library in this section include Kids Cook 1-2-3 by Rozanne Gold, One Giant Leap by Robert Burleigh, First Encyclopedia of the Human Body by Usborne, and Dogs on Duty by Dorothy Patent.  Come to the children’s room to see what the 600s are all about.

This Week's Special Event! Hartford Symphony Orchestra Instrument Zoo!

Come to the Orchestra Zoo!

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to play the violin? How about the flute? Or the drums? Well, you don’t have to wonder any longer.  

Come to the orchestra zoo to try out all different types of instruments and see which one you might want to learn to play.  The Hartford Symphony Orchestra will be bringing a clarinet, flute, violin, cello, trombone, trumpet, saxophone, and drums?????  

You can figure out what instrument fits you best or which instrument you want to master next.  Join us on Wednesday July 30^th at 2pm for this great musical event!

Tuesday July 29th is Children's Author Night!

Come to the library next Tuesday night, 7/29, at 7pm, to experience our Children’s Author night.  Local authors will visit to share their books.  

You will have a chance to talk with the authors, buy their books, and have them signed.  

You will also be able to enter a raffle for a prize bag full of fun children’s books.  

This event will feature:

Jerry Craft, The Offenders A freak accident gives a diverse group of middle school bullies super powers. But instead of transforming into cool super-beings, they are forced to take on the characteristics of the kids they pick on.

 Marilyn Davis, Maddie and Beanie’s Magical Journey

A girl's chance meeting with an abandoned pony is just the start of magical journeys in a fantasy fiction trilogy for ages 9-12.  Local author, Marilyn Davis will show a brief video of the rescued pony that was the inspiration for the story.

Gail Gauthier, Saving the planet and stuff

 A traditionally published writer will discuss her experience with self-publishing.

 Stacy DeKeyser, The Brixen Witch

Stacey is the author of 5 books for kids. Hear the inside story of how a family vacation sparked the idea for The Brixen Witch and its sequel .

Having fun at Mr. Tim’s food science program?

Looking for a project for your next science fair? Just want to learn more about all the cool things in our world? J500, the science section is for you.  

In this section you can learn all about math, the solar system, electricity, rocks & minerals, volcanoes, weather, cool science experiments, and every animal you can imagine.

Some of our favorite J500 books are The Animal Book by Steve Jenkins, Z is for Zookeeper by Marie and Roland Smith, The Magic School Bus Inside a Hurricane by Joanna Cole, A Drop of Water by Walter Wick, Heat Fundamentals Funtastic Science Experiments for Kids by Robert W. Wood, and Far-out Guide to Jupiter by Mary Kay Carson. Come to the library to learn more sweet stuff about science.

These are bubbles like you’ve never seen before.  

Come watch Casey Carle make bubble balloons, fling bubbles through the air, make double bubbles, and so much more.  

Be prepared to see some of the coolest, biggest, and most amazing bubble creations of your life.  You don’t want to miss out on this exciting performance.  

To see it come to the community room on Wednesday July 23^rd at 2pm.

Hola. Bonjour. Hallo. Zdravo. Guten Tag. 

Do you know what all of these words mean? 

They are all different ways to say hello.  

If you want to learn more ways to say hello or even want to start to pick up a new language, check out the 400s.  

In this section you will find books about all different languages.  

You can learn Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Italian, Russian, and even Sign Language.

You’ll have a chance to hang out with friends, meet new people from the community, and cool off from the hot summer sun.

Ever wonder about all the soldiers who fight hard to protect our country? 

How about what exactly the president does? 

Want to learn more about different Christmas traditions or how the first Thanksgiving came to be?

If you do, the 300s are for you. 

In the 300s you can explore all different types of topics including different careers, the police, environmental issues, holidays, and fairy tales. 

Our World by Maureen Hunter-Bone and Thea Feldman, Wildfires from the Library of Natural Disasters, The U.S. Navy by Tom Streissguth, Vote by Eileen Christelow, and Peace one Day by Jeremy Gilley are just a few of the books we have here at the library from the 300s.

Have you ever heard of the man who held the world on his shoulders? 

His name was Atlas.  

If you want to find out more about him and other powerful people like Zeus, Athena, and Hercules, look in the 200s.  

Here you can find everything you want to know about Greek and Roman mythology and different religions.

Some of the books we have from the 200s that we think are pretty cool are Norse Mythology A to Z by Kathleen N. Daly, The First Olympic Games by Jean Richards, Greek Myths by Sally Pomme Clayton, and Mythology by Neil Philip.  If you want to read any of these awesome books, come visit the library!
